What are Quantities and Symbols?
Many children can count from 1 to 20, but do not understand what the numbers represent. In this exercise you introduce the concept of more than ten and how it’s represented with tens and ones.
Before beginning this exercise your child should be confident with the numbers and quantities 1 to 10.
In this video we show you how to introduce the quantity of a number, the symbol of a number, and then combine the quantity and symbol.
Materials Needed:
To introduce the numbers and quantities 11 to 20 to your child you will need ten Number Cards, and rulers, linked beads, or cubes to represent each quantity. You can make your own materials or download a set of the Earlyminds Numbers 11 to 20.
Instructions:
Follow the steps in the video introducing two quantities at a time. Make sure your child is confident with these quantities before going on to the next two. Taking your time will help your child to retain each new lesson.
When your child is confident with the quantities from eleven to twenty you can move on to the symbols for the numbers in the same way. Introduce two numbers at a time, making sure your child is confident with the symbols before going on to the next two.
Finally you combine the numbers and quantities.
