What is the alphabet?
Many children can say the alphabet, but do not understand that letters represent the sounds in words.
In this video we show you how to introduce the beginning sounds of words using the phonetic sounds (‘phonetic’ means representing the sounds of speech).
If you are unsure of the sounds of the letters you can watch our video showing the phonetic sounds of each letter of the alphabet.
We suggest introducing the letter sounds most common in word building and reading instead of alphabetical order.
The suggested order of introduction is:
To introduce the alphabet letter sounds to your child you will need 26 Letter Cards, one for each letter of the alphabet, and 26 Picture Cards to represent each letter sound. You can make your own materials or download a set of the Earlyminds Alphabet Letter and Picture Cards.
Follow the steps in the video introducing two letters at a time. Make sure your child is confident with the new sounds before going on to the next two letters, this will help with the retention of each new lesson.
